When a standard arm is not enough

Most office monitor arms are rated to around 8–9 kg and 32 inches. That covers the majority of desks — and none of the interesting ones. A 34-inch ultrawide, a 43-inch panel on a control desk, a 49-inch curved super-ultrawide on a trading or design position: all of them are outside what a standard arm will safely carry.

Heavy-duty arms solve this with a stronger gas-spring cylinder and a heavier post and joints. The LUMI LDT52-C012 is the model we supply for this class — rated 1–18 kg, sized for screens up to 49 inches, including curved and ultrawide panels, with 460 mm of extension so a large screen can still be pushed back to a comfortable distance.

The mechanism matters as much as the rating. A mechanical spring strong enough to hold 18 kg is too stiff to move without both hands, which is why every serious heavy-duty arm is gas spring: the piston counterbalances the weight, so a 15 kg screen still moves at a fingertip and stays where you leave it.

  • Rated 1–18 kg — 14 kg for curved screens
  • Screens up to 49 inches, including ultrawide and curved
  • Gas spring — heavy screens still move at a fingertip
  • 460 mm extension for comfortable viewing distance
  • ±180° rotation, tilt ±45°, swivel ±90°
  • Clamp or grommet fixing — grommet preferred for heavy screens

About 57-inch super-ultrawide panels: we do not recommend a desk-clamped arm at that size. The largest screen the LDT52-C012 is rated for is 49 inches, and a 57-inch panel puts more leverage on a desk clamp than most desks will take. For screens that large we would specify a floor stand or a wall mount — both of which we supply. Ask us and we will quote the right one rather than sell you an arm that is out of its rating.

Heavy-duty & ultrawide arms — FAQs

An arm rated well above the 8–9 kg that a standard office arm carries. In our range that is the gas-spring LDT52-C012, rated 1–18 kg for a single screen and sized for panels up to 49 inches. If your monitor weighs more than about 9 kg without its stand, this is the class you need.

The LUMI LDT52-C012 is rated for screens up to 49 inches, including curved and ultrawide panels, at up to 18 kg (14 kg for curved screens). That covers the common 49-inch super-ultrawide panels used on trading and design desks. Always check your specific monitor’s weight without the stand before ordering.

Not in this range. The largest screen we can support on a single desk arm is 49 inches on the LDT52-C012. 57-inch super-ultrawide panels are heavier and longer than any desk-clamped arm we stock is rated for — and very few desks will take that leverage on a clamp. For screens that size we would look at a floor stand or a wall mount instead, and we can quote either.

Not a different arm, but a lower weight allowance. On the LDT52-C012 the rating is 18 kg flat and 14 kg curved — the curve shifts the centre of mass further from the VESA plate, so the arm carries less. Use the curved figure when checking your screen.

Effectively, yes. A mechanical spring stiff enough to hold 15–18 kg is too stiff to adjust comfortably. A gas piston counterbalances the weight so a heavy screen still moves at a fingertip — which is why every heavy-duty arm worth buying is gas spring.

This is worth checking before you order. A heavy arm on a thin, unsupported or glass desktop can flex or mark it. The clamp needs a desktop within its thickness range and ideally a supported edge; the grommet fixing spreads the load better. On corporate orders we check this at the site survey.
